2004 APECA/UConn Dental Campaign

Dental Care for Peruvians

University of Connecticut Dental Students in Peruvian VillagesThanks to a student initiative in the USA, years of dental campaign experience on the part of dental professionals and lots of coordination in remote villages, APECA conducted a great 10th dental campaign with the 3rd year dental students of the University of Connecticut. Eleven students, supervised by three preceptors and two hygienists, provided clinics in 8 villages from February 29 to March 6 treated over 414 patients and provided dental education on preventative care to hundreds more.

The purpose of the APECA/UConn dental program is to offer dental services to impoverished villagers who live in isolated communities which do not have access to dental care. For nine years, 3rd year dental students assisted APECA by delivery of dental services. Several dental professionals participated as preceptors. Serious work during the day, soccer games in the village square, and evenings of entertainment and conversation at EL Fundo have made memories that last a lifetime! This is a remarkable chance for students to use their clinic experience to the fullest under the supervision of licensed dentists. This educational experience cannot be duplicated anywhere else.

This Summer On The Amazon River

El Trochero

Join our team of volunteers this June, 2004 when we build a needed dormitory at APECA’s base camp, ‘El Fundo’, on the upper Amazon River in Peru. This dormitory will provide lodging for medical teams from abroad as well as for people from remote villages who are in training at El Fundo. This adventure is open to everyone as long as there are spaces available (limit of 12).Building experience is not required, only the willingness to work.

There is no hotel at El Fundo. We will share the basic existing facilities which include beds with mosquito netting, showers and flush toilets. We depart on June 12th.For those who can only spend two weeks, we have included a weekend in Iquitos and 2 days in Lima where there is plenty to do and see. For those who can spend an additional week, we are offering a tour of Cusco/Sacred Valley/ Machu Picchu. This is an exciting opportunity to see Peru and give back at the same time. If you are unable to go this time, let us know that you are interested in a future trip. For further information, contact Bill Owen at (818)348-6614 or wmowen@apecaperu.org.
